- Hi,
-
- >You don't consider army service a vacation? ;-)
- .....No. Not exactly.
-
- >I did my eleven months some years back and didn't think it was too bad.
- >I've never had so much time to spend on whatever I liked to do (reading
- >and programming mostly), but I guess i had an unusually pleasant posting.
- You're very lucky. But not as much as I am.
- ;)
-
- >> Laurent must be on vacation, because I have had absolutely no news from him.
- >He went away some time ago, but I can't find the relevant email at the moment.
- Yes. The problem is that half the time, he doesn't have access to his
- e-mail: he's a student doing periods in a telecom firm and he has e-mail
- only during these periods. I'll suggest him that he takes an account on a
- BBS which will not cost him a franc (except for the communications)
-
- >Is that really 100% certain? We're after all only writing a program that
- >can use their files, which does not _have_ to be illegal, but it could of
- >course be.
- iD software is quite explicit about this. To develop something that has
- anything to do with DOOM, you must have their agreement. I've read in a
- newsletter the case of a group that developped a version of Wolf3D for the
- archimedes (you know of this british risc machine?). This caused no problem
- because, as far as I can remember, wolf3D is now public domain. They wanted
- to convert DOOM too, but dropped the project because of the cost of the license.
- I don't remember too well. Anyway, this has to be settled.
-
- >I'm aware that we can't call our program DOOM, but we really need some
- >kind of name for it. 'A DOOM(TM) compatible game for the Atari Falcon' is
- >a bit too long IMO. ;-)
- Perhaps something like WAD, or BAD MOOD, I don't know. It's not very
- important anyway.
-
- >.WADs, though. The main memory hog seems to be the DVIEW temporary arrays
- >if my optimizations don't work.
- What do you mean?
-
- >By the way, I wrote a couple of letters about this that I sent to Laurent
- >earlier. Would you like copies?
- Yes. Sure.
-
- >Well, it should be rather easy to extend DVIEW to handle texture mapping.
- I don't know. I would do it the other way round. That is, start from scratch
- a new program beginning with the rendering part. We would at first use very
- simple data that we would build by ourselves to test it. Then, extend this
- core, inspiring ourselves from DVIEW as much as possible.
- It's IMO easier to do a good and machine specific program from scratch than
- try to optimize an already existent program. And it's C. Of course, it will
- save a lot of work and should be a constant inspiration and reference. What
- do you think?
- I'll try my ideas about texture mapping as soon as possible. I'll tell you
- about it when I have results. The problem is that I don't have much time to
- program. And I have to admit that I work on another personal project, but
- that doesn't take me too much time, fortunately. Anyway, for me, Doom is the
- priority. After my job, of course.
- BTW, I've never asked. What do you do in life, apart from programming?
-
- >I'm sorry that I didn't reply before now, but you know how it is at work
- >sometimes... ;-)
- Yep.
-
- Regards,
- Bertrand
